TMJ/TMD Syndrome
TMJ syndrome is caused when the facial muscles, teeth and temporomandibular joints are out of alignment. Neuromuscular dentistry can correct the bite and realign the jaw, placing it in a position that relieves the symptoms associated with this disorder. Dr. Elke and his staff have extensive training using state-of-the-art technology to determine if your symptoms are caused from TMJ syndrome and if that is the case, they will determine the correct positioning of your jaw for optimal relief of symptoms.
Common symptoms of TMJ/TMD syndrome:
  • Headaches/Migraines
  • Facial Pain
  • Neck and shoulder pain
  • Ringing in the ears (Tinnitus)
  • Sensitive and sore teeth
  • Worn or cracked teeth
  • Clenching or grinding of the teeth
  • Jaw pain
  • Limited jaw movement or locking
  • Clicking or popping in the jaw joints
  • Numbness in the fingers or arms
TMJ is usually caused by having a “bad bite” or malocclusion, meaning the upper and lower teeth do not correctly close or are out of alignment. When teeth are not aligned properly the muscles in the face are forced to strain to provide support to the jaw needed for chewing and swallowing. When the bite is not aligned properly the muscles will be stressed, even while the jaw is in a resting position. When the jaw is habitually out of alignment many of the symptoms listed above can occur with little relief.

As uncomfortable as this condition may be the treatment is non-invasive and painless. Dr. Elke and his team will first find the most relaxed position for your jaw. This is done using a technology called ULF-TENS. ULF-TENS stands for Ultra Low Frequency Transcutaneous Electrical Neural Stimulation. Although the name is intimidating most patients enjoy this treatment and find it very relaxing. A rhythmic pulsing relaxes the strained muscles with gentle massage and ULF-TENS allows your jaw to be in a completely relaxed ideal position. Once the optimal position is realized Dr. Elke will create an orthodic device or “splint” that will realign your bite and restore your jaw to its optimal position, usually this relieves symptoms. The orthodic device is removable and virtually invisible when worn. It simply fits comfortably over your existing lower teeth ensuring you jaw will remain in the optimal resting position.
If you believe that you are suffering from TMJ / TMD Syndrome please contact our office to book an appointment with Dr. Elke to discuss your concerns. Why suffer from TMJ discomfort needlessly?
